The concept of pipes connecting processes is suggested by Doug McIlroy at Bell Labs. See http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/mdmpipe.html. In Perl the same concept is seen in the default variable $_.

Linux Timeline
As part of our 100th issue celebration, we present 100 of the most significant events in Linux history. As shown in the timeline, the first issue of Linux Journal coincided with the release of Linux 1.0. Ever since, the fortunes of our magazine have followed those of Linux at large.

History of Tux the Linux Penguin, The
In the beginning, sometime in early 1996, several people were talking on the linux-kernel mailing list about a suitable logo/mascot for Linux. Of the many, many suggestions, many involved parodies of other operating system logo's - or were strong, noble beasts such as Sharks or Eagles. At some point (I'm not sure when), Linus Torvalds (the father of Linux) casually mentioned that he was rather fond of Penguins - which rather stopped the debate in its tracks.

Guide to Processor History
CPU history basically starts in 1971, when a small unknown company, Intel, for the first time combined multiple transistors to form a central processing unit - a chip called Intel 4004. However, it was 8 years before the first PC was constructed.

Processors by Family
Here are microprocessor devices catagorized by, bit size and device type. The OEM manufacturer of the series is shown after the series number. All clones of the OEM chip are also displayed on the processor series page.
CPU = Central Processing Unit
MCU = Micro Controller Unit (Micro Computer Unit in older literature)
Slice = Processor Slice
FPU = Floating Point Unit (Math Co-processor) for associated CPUs in the same bit size grouping.

Centaur Technology
In 1995, Centaur Technology set out to prove that a small team of microprocessor engineers could design an affordable x86 processor for the neglected sub-$1000 PC market. At the time, it was a visionary idea.
Now, fourteen years later, Centaur has successfully designed the world's smallest x86 processors, has shipped thirteen different parts, and consistently provides the fastest design cycle in the industry-from concept to completion in about 9 months, 1/3 the time of our competitors.
Centaur’s relationship with parent company VIA Technologies, the #2 chipset maker in the world after Intel, has positioned us to be the dominant force in bringing PC power to developing nations. New challenges are just ahead for Centaur Technology’s visionary solutions.

CPU-Collector.com
Welcome to CPU-Collector.com, the place where CPU collectors can browse, research, and discuss all things CPU related. CPU-Collector.com is a completely educational and nonprofit website. This website features my large CPU collection, my trade list, interactive forums, links to other collector sites, and various links to other great resources. I have tried my best to provide the most accurate information on the CPUs in my collection, but information on the website should not be considered definitive and may be incorrect. All CPU photos have been hastily taken by myself, and are under copyright of CPU-Collector.com. I am always looking for new CPUs, so if you have scrap or spare CPUs that you would like to donate, trade, or sell, please contact me. For more information about this website, please visit the About section.

History of Intel Corporation
Intel Corporation is the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, with 11 fabrication facilities and six assembly and test facilities around the world. Intel has changed the global marketplace dramatically since it was founded in 1968; the company invented the microprocessor, the "computer on a chip" that made possible the first handheld calculators and personal computers (PCs). By the early 21st century, Intel's microprocessors were found in approximately 80 percent of PCs worldwide. The company's product line also includes chipsets and motherboards; flash memory used in wireless communications and other applications; networking devices and equipment for accessing the Internet, local area networks, and home networks; and embedded control microchips used in networking products, laser printers, factory automat ion instruments, cellular phone base stations, and other applications . Intel has remained competitive through a combination of clever marketing, well-supported research and development, superior manufacturing proficiency, a vital corporate culture, prowess in legal matters, and an ongoing alliance with software giant Microsoft Corporation often referred to as "Wintel."
