C (Dennis Ritchie, Bell Labs)
Dennis Ritchie developed C essentially to write operating systems. Ritchie and Thompson along with co-worker Brian Kernighan, developed and rewrote the UNIX operating system kernel using Ritchie's C compiler on a DEC PDP-11/20 in 1973. It flourished from there, and today, C is the basis for object oriented languages like C++ and Java.

Brief History Of The Internet, A
The official story of the Internet was that it was started in the late 1960's by the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, or DARPA). The project was started to allow contractors to share valuable computing resources. At that time, computers were very primative, and extremely expensive, so any increased communication, that we now take for granted, using a network was extremely beneficial.

Email History
When V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai created the first email system in 1978 for UMDNJ at Newark, NJ, he literally created the electronic version of paper postal mail. Mail meant interoffice / inter-organization communications. A typical mail piece was the MEMORANDUM, with “To:”, “From:”, “Date:”, “Subject:”, “Cc:”, “Bcc:”, “Attachment”, elements. As a high school student, Ayyadurai was challenged by the Director of the Computer Laboratory at UMDNJ, Les Michelson, to create an “Electronic Mail” system for UMDNJ, the electronic version of the interoffice paper mail system.

History of Macintosh Viruses
The history of viruses and computer security is interesting and dynamic, starting with geeky pranksters and evolving into a multi-billion dollar business. Fortunately (whether by design or destiny), Macintosh viruses have been noticeably missing. And while the threats for Mac are few and far between, they’re not completely nonexistent. Some of the earliest known viruses started on Mac computers and new malware still pop up every now and then, even for Mac OS X.

Development of the C Language, The
The C programming language was devised in the early 1970s as a system implementation language for the nascent Unix operating system. Derived from the typeless language BCPL, it evolved a type structure; created on a tiny machine as a tool to improve a meager programming environment, it has become one of the dominant languages of today.

Brief History of Email, A
Am I alone in thinking that open-source email technologies have completely stagnated over the last few years? It seems like 10-year old technology is still state of the art when it comes to building your own email servers these days, and I’d love to do something about it.
