As commerce developed in earlier societies, people began to realize the need for a bookkeeping system to enable them to add, subtract, and record simple transactions. To facilitate the bookkeeping process, counting devices were developed. At first, people used fingers, stones, and sticks to count. Later on, mechanical calculators emerged, but they were slow and bulky. When electricity was discovered, electronic components replaced the bulky mechanical parts and enabled smaller, faster computing devices. Computers are continually evolving towards faster computations, increased storage capacity, and smaller size, while maintaining their affordability.

The history of computers, and the history of computers in education 500 BC Evidence of the abacus, the world’s first calculating machine, exists from as far back as 2,500 years ago in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley. The earliest form of the abacus is a stone or clay tablet that uses pebbles for counting. Grooves are carved into the tablet and pebbles, representing numbers, are placed in these grooves. The pebbles can slide along the grooves from one side of the tablet to the other, thus allowing for easier counting. The abacus also helps ancient peoples perform simple calculations such as addition and subtraction.

The Kennedy–Nixon Presidential campaign of 1960 brought forth an unlikely issue: American science and technology. The Russians had beaten the United States to space with their Sputnik satellite, and many felt the Russians had even more guided missiles than did the U.S. The years ahead would show the "missile gap" to be illusory, though the arms race would continue. By the end of the decade, American astronaut Neil Armstrong had set foot on the moon, a staggering achievement made possible by breakthroughs in electronics and other fields throughout the sixties. In fact, the next 15 years would teem with great discoveries in fields as diverse as microelectronics and microbiology.

How the Computer Began People Learn to Count The first human being to record numbers in a storage medium may have been a Sumerian accountant somewhere in the lower Mesopotamian river valley about 3200 B.C. using the sexagesimal numbering system based on the numbers 6 and 10. The discovery of arithmetic brought the Sumerians tangible benefits including the ability to numerically model the products of their economy, and their commerce grew making Mesopotamia the crater of Western civilization.
