Univac 9400
This truly one-of-a-kind machine, a UNIVAC 9400 mainframe, is the heart of one of the most impressive exhibitions of the museum. In the 1960s it was used in the computer center of an industrial complex located in Cologne. Following its replacement by new hardware, the system was given to a school in Cologne where it served for many years helping the computer science teachers.

History of Supercomputing at FSU
Supercomputing power came to the Florida State University campus through the auspices of the Supercomputer Computations Research Institute (SCRI), which began operation in 1984. It was established by the U.S. Department of Energy in response to a nationwide discussion on the need to advance research in a variety of fields, all of which required large-scale computers.

External Hard Drives - History and Developments
When you think of a computer, chances are good that you imagine the case; the computer as a whole. However, what would you identify as the most important part of the computer? Would you point to the motherboard? Perhaps you would say that the processor is the most important part of a computer.

Data storage
Data storage has progressed in leaps and bounds over the last 50 years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Trends have consistently shown exponential growth in this area, making it surprisingly easy to predict future advances. Before we look at these future advances, however, it is perhaps worth looking back at the history of data storage.

Brief History of the Hard Disk Drive, A
Paper Tape for Data
The first PCs used paper tape and Data cassette recorder the same kind that you listen to music with, using a data cassette for storage was very slow. Removable floppy disks as storage devices did not become popular before 1978 when Apple introduced the disk II. The term "floppy" accurately fit the earliest 8-inch PC diskettes and the 5.25-inch diskettes that succeeded them. The inner disk that holds the data usually is made of mylar and coated with a magnetic oxide, and the outer, plastic cover, bends easily. The inner disk of today's smaller, 3.5-inch floppies are similarly constructed, but they are housed in a rigid plastic case, which is much more durable than the flexible covering on the larger diskettes.

History of Hard Drives
The hard disk drive was invented by some IBM engineers working under Rey Johnson at IBM in San Jose, CA, in about 1952 to 1954. I worked at IBM from 1965 to 1981 and got to meet and work with some of those men - Rey Johnson, John Lynott, Don Cronquist, Bob Schneider and Lou Stevens come to mind right now.

Hard Drive
A hard drive (also known as a hard disk, hard disk drive, HD or HDD) is a non-volatile data storage device used in computers. Hard Drives are a non-volatile form of data storage, meaning that even when there is no power to the drive data is retained. Data is stored on a magnetic surface employing multiple spinning platters and moving read-write heads.

Computer Surveillance
Computer surveillance is the act of performing surveillance of computer activity, and of data stored on a hard drive or being transferred over the Internet.
Computer surveillance programs are widespread today, and almost all Internet traffic is closely monitored for clues of illegal activity.
