Brief History of Decision Support Systems, A
Summary
Information Systems researchers and technologists have built and investigated Decision Support Systems (DSS) for approximately 40 years. This paper chronicles and explores the developments in DSS beginning with building model-driven DSS in the late 1960s, theory developments in the 1970s, and the implementation of financial planning systems, spreadsheet DSS and Group DSS in the early and mid 80s. Data warehouses, Executive Information Systems, OLAP and Business Intelligence evolved in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Finally, the chronicle ends with knowledge-driven DSS and the implementation of Web-based DSS in the mid-1990s.

Operating Systems Development - Basic Theory
This series is intended to demonstrate and teach operating system development from the ground up.
Introduction
Welcome to the wonderful and crazy world of operating systems!
In the previous tutorial, we have defined what an operating system is. An operating system provides the basic interface between the user and the computer system. It provides the basic look and feel for the system.
We have also taken a look at alot of tools that will help us. Assemblers, Compliers, Linkers, PartCopy, MagicISO, and Bochs.

History of Operating Systems
Historically operating systems have been tightly related to the computer architecture, it is good idea to study the history of operating systems from the architecture of the computers on which they run.
Operating systems have evolved through a number of distinct phases or generations which corresponds roughly to the decades.

Computing
Computing is the activity of developing and using computer technology, including computer hardware and software. It is the computer-specific part of information technology. Computer science is the study of the theoretical foundations of computing and the application of the theories in computing.

Most Important Software Innovations, The
David A. Wheeler
First version 2001-08-01; Revised 2011-07-22
1. Introduction
Too many people confuse software innovations with other factors, such as the increasing speed of computer and network hardware. This paper tries to end the confusion by identifying the most important innovations in software, removing hardware advances and products that didn’t embody significant new software innovations. This paper presents its criteria for the most important software innovations and sources, the software innovations themselves, discusses software patents and what’s not an important software innovation, and then closes with Conclusions.

Programming Language
A Programming Language is a small set of words and syntactic rules that allow people to write computer programs. When the computer program is executed by a computer, it will follow the instructions and perform the requested work. Many different programming languages have been defined. Some are general-purpose and some are specific to a particular problem domain. However, programming languages evolve over time and usually become more general-purpose. For instance, the BASIC programming language and the Pascal programming language were originally intended as teaching languages, for students of programming. But both are now popular as general-purpose languages. The features of most modern programming languages are similar, but the words and syntax differ. For instance, the PRINT statement is used to output data in BASIC, whereas WRITELN is used for the same purpose in Pascal. Even when the words and syntax are similar between two languages, often the meaning (semantics) is different.

Brief History of the Computer (b.c. – 1993a.d.), A
Note: Yes, a lot of this is from Grolier’s Encyclopedia. Hey, I was young. I didn’t know any better. Credit where credit is due. Also, this information is only current as of the early 1990′s (1993, to be exact), and no I’m not planning to add more information anytime soon. I would not recommend scamming this for your own homework, as some of the conclusions are rather humorous today.

Scala's Prehistory
Scala was designed from 2001 by Martin Odersky and his group at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Previously, (1986-1989) Martin worked as a Ph.D. student with Niklaus Wirth at ETH Zuerich as a Ph.D. student on Modula-2 and Oberon. After that, he worked on programming language fundamentals and functional programming.
Many of his research papers are found on his website.

Retrocomputing Museum, The
The Retrocomputing Museum is dedicated to programs that induce sensations that hover somewhere between nostalgia and nausea — the freaks, jokes, and fossils of computing history. Our exhibits include many languages, some machine emulators, and a few games.
