The Hairpin, founded by Edith Zimmerman and run by Haley Mlotek, serves women readers. The Billfold, run by Mike Dang, investigates how we live with money. The editorial and business staff of the Awl is drawn from companies like the Huffington Post, Vox, Gawker, BuzzFeed, the New Yorker, and Deadspin. The Awl was launched in 2009 by Alex Balk and Choire Sicha. It is headquartered in New York.
