Bio/Description
Author of the most-cited paper in software over two decades, Belady's 1966 article on Virtual Memory Systems set a landmark acknowledged by the Citation Index Classic. A design engineer and veteran senior executive in Research and Development, he has had extensive worldwide experience as Director of research programs in software and information technology, and has been experienced in bringing new products and technology to market. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and then an M.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest.
Between 1950 and 1953 he served on the Air Force technical staff for three years of service, designing equipment for MIG-15 fighter planes. Following that, Belady worked as a design engineer in Hungary and at German and French companies. Between 1961 and 1980 he joined IBM, serving as the Corporate Director of Software Technology for IBM World Headquarters Watson Research Center, and then as Manager of the IBM Research Laboratory in Tokyo. He has also served as a founding Vice President of Austin's Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp. (MCC) and as the Executive Director of the Austin Software Council (now known as the Austin Technology Council).
He has served as Chairman and CEO American R and D of Mitsubishi Electric and as a member of the Mitsubishi Electric America Board of Directors. In 2002, Belady founded Eutecus, Inc., which was awarded a number of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA/JPL). Commercialization of the technology has been actively underway in a number of areas, including intelligent security and surveillance applications as well as multiple military target acquisition, tracking and guidance scenarios.
Eutecus' products have included the Multi-core Video Analytics Engine (MVE), and a family of high-speed cameras and VA modules (the award-winning Bi-i), enabling software libraries for rapid application prototyping (InstantVision) and applications development/consulting. In addition to his industry experience, he has held several academic posts, including Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley and Adjunct Professor at the New York Polytechnic University. Belady also taught in UT Austin's College of Engineering.
He holds nine computer-related patents. He has served as a member of advisory boards of several computer companies in the United States, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, and has been a foreign member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Belady has served as Editor-In-Chief of the IEEE Transaction on Software Engineering and has also been awarded the J. D. Warnier Prize for Excellence in Information.
