Bio/Description
Creator of Perl, Wall is one of the most influential figures in the open-source software movement.
Wall studied linguistics and music at Seattle Pacific University, where he graduated in 1976. He later attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, pursuing a degree in natural languages. He met his wife Gloria there, and the two married in 1976. After graduate school, he worked as a programmer at Unisys and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
In 1987, Wall released Perl, a general-purpose scripting language that drew on his background in linguistics and his practical experience as a systems programmer. The language was designed to make common programming tasks easier and more natural. His creation of Perl established him as one of the most influential figures in the open-source software movement.
Wall also created two other widely used Unix tools: the patch utility and the rn newsreader. He has served as the primary author of the Perl programming documentation and co-authored the book Programming Perl, which described the language in depth and became a landmark reference for developers worldwide.
He received the Free Software Foundation's Award for the Advancement of Free Software in 1998. Wall is sometimes called the father of Perl, and his influence on scripting languages and open-source culture remains profound throughout the history of computing.
