Bio/Description

Founder of the group that developed Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) and starter of aspectj.org, Lopes has served as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at University of California, Irvine. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Northeastern University, in Boston. Prior to becoming a professor, Lopes worked as a Research Scientist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where she became most known for founding the group that developed Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) and started aspectj.org.

More recently, she has worked in ubiquitous computing, with a focus in communication mechanisms that are pervasive, secure, and intuitive for humans to perceive and interact with. Lopes has been a member of the ICSE 2012, ICSM 2012, and OOPSLA 2012 Conference Program Committees.

Among her most recent co-authored publications were: "Mote-based Underwater Sensor Networks: Opportunities, Challenges, and Guidelines," Telecommunication Systems Journal (Kluwer), March 2008, with R. Jurdak, A.G. Ruzzelli, and G.M.P. O'Hare; "Adaptive Low Power Listening for Wireless Sensor Networks," IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, Volume 6, Issue 8, pp. 988–1004, August 2007, with R. Jurdak and P. Baldi; and "Reliable Symbol Synchronization in Acoustic Sensor Networks," Proceedings of IEEE GlobeCom, Washington, D.C., 2007, with R. Jurdak, A.G. Ruzzelli, and G.M.P. O'Hare.
