Crowdsourced WiFi-sharing network

UnifiApp is a crowdsourced WiFi platform that unlocks mobile connectivity in emerging markets. Their Android app allows users to share the spare capacity of their WiFi router in exchange for free access to the wider UnifiApp network, which includes the WiFi networks added by all users. Whenever their smartphone is within range of a WiFi router in their network, it automatically connects to that network. Every new member of the UnifiApp community expands the network’s WiFi coverage, creating network effects that provide increasing utility to their users and a higher barrier to entry for potential competitors. A user can choose how much of their network’s capacity and bandwidth to share, and UnifiApp’s firewall/VPN ensures security by throttling bandwidth and preventing misuse. They have launched in Mumbai, India, where they have ~8,200 routers and ~9,000 users. They plan to expand to other major cities in India in 2015.
