Healthcare is facing a host of challenges with the rising cost of care, advances in medical treatments and higher performance expectations. Concurrently, healthcare data is increasing at an exponential rate. This data, in the form of e.g. electronic health records, genomic and other research data, health insurance claims and data collected by personal health trackers, could provide an unprecedented resource – if only it could be truly harnessed. They believe artificial intelligence and machine learning, in the right setting, can enhance the quality of healthcare while reducing costs. That is the goal they set out to achieve. A few years ago, they looked at the available technologies that deal with big data and artificial intelligence: they found products that provide natural language processing, visualization tools, data management solutions or basic data analytics but few of these specialized in healthcare. They found approaches that tried to apply wholesale AI technologies developed for marketing, financial markets and business intelligence to healthcare: a typical case of trying to fit a market to a product rather than the other way round. The case for a healthcare-focused artificial intelligence was clear. So they decided to build Kirontech to do it.
