The Internet Society is an independent international nonprofit that engages in a wide spectrum of internet issues, including policy, governance, technology, and development. It sets public policies that enable open access; facilitates the open development of standards, protocols, administration, and the technical infrastructure of the internet; and organizes events and opportunities that bring people together to share insights and opinions. The organization provides information and educational opportunities that include training workshops in developing countries, facilitates leadership programs that include the cultivation of Next Generation Leaders and Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Ambassadors, and supports local Chapters that serve the needs of the growing global internet community. The Internet Society promotes innovation by providing grants and awards to relevant initiatives and outreach efforts that address the humanitarian, educational, and societal contexts of online connectivity; and acknowledges individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the data communications community via the Jonathan B. Postel and Itojun Service Awards. The Internet Society was founded in 1992 and is based in Reston, Virginia.
