It is written using Mac OS X's Cocoa API and released under the GNU GPL. As it is based on the libpurple protocol library, Adium has the ability to connect its users to any number of messaging accounts on any combination of supported messaging services, and then it allows them to chat with other people using those services. Adium doesn’t host any Instant Messaging services by itself because Adium is a third party client, which connects its clients to services run by other people. Adium was launched in 2000, and it is developed by the Adium team.
